Literacy Costs Health Care Industry $73 Billion A Year

A recent study of English-speaking patients in a public hospital revealed that:

  • 33% were unable to read basic health materials.
  • 26% of the patients could not read their appointment slips, and
  • 42% did not understand the labels on their prescription bottles.
